Functional Health Testing in the UK
Understanding blood, gut and metabolic test results to guide personalised nutrition and lifestyle strategies
Why use functional medicine health testing?
Functional medicine health testing looks beyond basic reference ranges to explore how different systems of the body are functioning and interacting. Rather than focusing on a particular diagnosis or medical condition alone, this approach helps identify patterns, imbalances, and stressors that may be contributing to ongoing symptoms or chronic health concerns.
Functional tests may include detailed blood markers, gut microbiome analysis, hormone and metabolic markers, and assessments of nutrient status or toxic load. On their own, these results can feel overwhelming or confusing — particularly when they appear “normal” but don’t reflect how you actually feel.
This is where interpretation matters. Functional testing is only useful when results are assessed in the context of your health history, symptoms, medications, lifestyle, and goals. The purpose is not to collect data, but to obtain actionable insights to inform a personalised nutrition and lifestyle plan that addresses underlying drivers rather than symptoms alone.
Functional testing can be particularly helpful for people seeking a deeper understanding of ongoing or complex health concerns, including:
metabolic health concerns such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidaemia
cardiovascular risk factors including raised cholesterol or blood pressure
Testing helps identify patterns across systems rather than focusing on a single diagnosis, allowing recommendations to be tailored to individual needs and priorities.
Access to these tests require the purchase of one of my 1:1 Nutrition Programme as listed here. Costs of all functional health tests aren’t included in any programme of support.

-
Blood testing provides a comprehensive snapshot of your overall health, uncovering certain nutrient deficiencies, inflammation markers, blood sugar regulation, cholesterol levels, and more. This allows for personalised recommendations to address imbalances and optimise metabolic, cardiovascular, and overall health.
-
Conventional medicine for thyroid testing is often limited to TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), which, while useful, does not provide a complete picture of thyroid function. A normal TSH level can mask underlying issues with thyroid hormone conversion or cellular uptake. That’s why I go beyond TSH and also assess free T3 (the active thyroid hormone) and free T4 (the precursor hormone), providing deeper insights into how well the thyroid is functioning. This comprehensive approach helps identify suboptimal thyroid activity, poor conversion of T4 to T3, and potential imbalances that may be missed with standard medical testing.
-
Genetic testing focuses on identifying single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that influence your predisposition to conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or detoxification challenges. This empowers us to tailor your nutrition and lifestyle plan based on your unique genetic blueprint.
-
Stool testing evaluates your gut microbiome, digestive function, parasites, hormone metabolism, and markers of inflammation or infection. This helps uncover root causes of symptoms such as bloating, fatigue, or chronic inflammation, guiding targeted interventions to support digestion and overall health.
-
Hormone testing assesses key markers for sex hormones, stress (cortisol and DHEA), and thyroid function. Imbalances in these areas can affect energy, mood, weight, and metabolism. Understanding your hormonal health allows for precise strategies to restore balance and vitality.
-
This testing evaluates markers such as blood sugar levels, insulin resistance, and lipid profiles, offering insights into your metabolic function. It's particularly valuable for those managing weight, diabetes, or cardiovascular conditions, guiding interventions to improve metabolic resilience.
-
Toxic load testing examines your body’s burden of environmental toxins such as heavy metals, pesticides, and chemicals. Some toxins can disrupt hormonal balance, effect blood sugar regulation, immune function, and cellular health. Identifying and addressing toxic load can support detoxification pathways and overall health.
-
Mould testing evaluates exposure to mould and mycotoxins, which can impact immune function, energy levels, and respiratory health. By identifying mould toxicity, we can implement effective strategies to reduce exposure and support your body’s detoxification processes.
